CHOOSING A PIPER
"To the making of a piper go seven years of his own learning,
and seven generations before"
1. MUSICIANSHIP
Musical experience is something you should strongly consider when hiring a piper.
No amount of showmanship can cover over poor musical ability. The bagpipe is first
and foremost a musical instrument, and thus should be played by those who have
a certain level of musical talent. Don't leave your important event in the hands of an
amateur musician. A good piper will be able to keep the tone of the pipes constant,
tune the pipes (Yes, they can be tuned!), and play in rhythm. Don't assume that because
someone wearing a fancy uniform claims to play an instrument, they actually can!
Ask for a demonstration of their playing ability.
2. SONG SELECTION
A skilled carpenter knows what tools are needed for each type of job and how to use them.
A skilled musician and performer understands the mood of the moment and creates
music to compliment that mood. Look for an experienced piper who has the ability to
play musical styles needed to create just the right mood to meet your particular need.
3. PROFESSIONAL
Look for a piper who is an experienced professional, prompt, courteous, flexible & easy
to work with. You are entering
into a business relationship for your special occasion. Be sure
you are comfortable with the person you are hiring. Check references and get as much
information as possible from the person you are looking to hire. You want your special occasion
to be memorable for the right reasons!
4. EXPERIENCE
There is simply no substitute for experience. A piper should know how to adapt to the many
varied and unexpected twists that special occasions can bring with them. An amateur
musician can be easily rattled by such circumstances resulting in poor
performance and behavior. With experience comes the knowledge and composure
to adapt to such unexpected situations.
5. DRESS
Expect to see a piper in a kilt and traditional attire whether in kilt, coat and tie or
full military dress. It does add to the overall experience. Expect the piper to wear appropriate
attire, be proficient and represent him or herself in a polished manner.
